The Philippines is an island nation located within the Malay Archipelago in Southeast Asia. It comprises of 7,107 islands, has a total land area of about 300,000km², it is the 72nd largest country in the world and supports a population of 85,236,913 people. The Philippine archipelago lies in the tropics and is a mecca for sun lovers and water sport enthusiasts.
An Adventure Travel Destination In The Philippines is Baler, which is the capital city of Aurora Province and is located on the eastern side of the main island, Luzon. A large portion of the Sierra Madre mountain range extends into the Province of Aurora consequently, most of the country side is mountainous.
The main link to Baler is via a twisting mountain road, containing numerous switchbacks, sharp turns and steep grades as it snakes through the Sierra Madre Mountain Range. The journey does however, provide one with some glorious views of the countryside and the beach riddled coastline.
Aurora has the greatest surfing beaches to be found in the Philippines. Huge rollers get whipped up in the Pacific Ocean and produce some fantastic waves when they hit the exposed beaches along the east coast at Baler. Charlie’s Point, which was made famous when it was chosen as the location for the surfing scenes in Francis Ford Coppola’s classic film, Apocalypse Now, is within walking distance of Baler, produces great waves and is popular among the local surfers.
Naturally, Aurora is a prime Adventure Travel Destination In The Philippines for mountain trekking enthusiasts. The Sierra Madre Mountain Ranges have a number of forest reserves and an abundance of clear streams with spectacular waterfalls surrounded by an abundance of ferns and native shrubs. Trekking through these mountains is an absolute delight as well as a rewarding experience.
San Luis is a popular point for trekkers to begin their journey into the mountains, and can be reached by jeepney from Baler. Cunayan Falls, Ditumabo Falls and Banju Springs are some of the places that are worthy of inspection in this area. Food and supplies for the journey, can be purchased from the many stall holders, in San Luis.
