Adventure Travel Destinations In Papua New Guinea

By: Oze Parrot

Papua New Guinea is a country in the south pacific that covers 462,840 km² and has a population of about 6 million people. The mainland of Papua New Guinea comprises of the eastern half of the world's second largest island, New Guinea. There are a countless number of islands in the surrounding waters that are also possessions of PNG.

Almost any entry point is an Adventure Travel Destination In Papua New Guinea as the country is so diverse, ranging from the balmy waters off the coast to the dense jungles containing many species of birds and wild life, beautiful, crocodile infested rivers that are teeming with fish to the rugged mountain areas that are heavily covered by rainforests.

The capital of PNG is Port Moresby, the city is set on on the south eastern coast of the island, in the Gulf of Papua and maintains a population of about a quarter of a million people. Port Moresby is serviced by an international airport. Apart from Port Moresby, there are only a couple of other cities on mainland PNG as 80% of the population live quite simply in rustic areas. There is no nightlife to speak of in Port Moresby and, if there was, the traveller would be well advised not to participate.

As Papua New Guinea is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, there are a number of active volcanos in the country that erupt quite often. Earthquakes are also quite common, some of which, generate tidal waves. Madang Province is an Adventure Travel Destination In Papua New Guinea, containing the Bismarck Ranges which has the highest peak of Mount Wilhelm at 4509m above sea level. Offshore, there are three active volcano islands, Karkar, Bagabag and Manam. The number of active volcanos in this region has created crater lakes, smoking volcanic cones and produced black sand beaches which are indeed, a spectacle for the Adventure traveller.

The town of Madang is also the base for the operator of the Sepik river crocodile safari. The safari takes hunters on a croc' hunting expedition up the Sepik river where the hunter will bag a five plus metre croc' and have it professionally mounted as a trophy to take home. Truly an unforgettable Adventure Travel Destination In Papua New Guinea
