When I was a young girl I thought that only elder people wore dentures. After all, my grandmother had upper dentures, and all of grandpa's teeth were false. I never thought that I could be wearing dentures while I was still a young person.
I was thirty three years old when I had to have the remainder of my teeth extracted, all nine of them. My teeth have not been healthy and they were eventually removed one by one. Except for the four front upper teeth which went all together and the new teeth were promptly set in their place and attached with the teeth next to them. But, eventually they all had to go.
When the last nine teeth were extracted I had the dentures placed immediately. I did not desire to be left without teeth.
Somehow I believed it would be tough to get used to having teeth in my mouth because of being without them for a while. Eventually, I found this to be correct. By having the dentures placed immediately upon extraction, I was never without teeth so the dentures felt like my natural teeth.
I have to accept that having the dentures placed immediately on extraction was difficult but only because I could not clean them myself for around three weeks. I had to visit the dentist's office where he removed the denture, cleaned it and returned it, during the time that the gums were healing.
After three weeks I was able to do this myself. In the beginning the task was a strange one. Taking out the dentures and scrubbing them and replacing them. But it did have its one light experience.
At that time my youngest boy was about four years old. He entered the bathroom one day just as I was brushing my denture. He stood there with his eyes and mouth full open, then turned around and ran out of the house as fast as he could. He ran down the block to my girlfriend's house yelling as loud as he could "Aunt Mary, Aunt Mary, imagine what my mommy can do?" When he stated her what I could do she walked him to my residence and we both explained dentures to him. That I was not automatically taking out my natural teeth. We still laugh about that, so many years later.
I still believe that the best way to place your denture is immediately after extraction (sometimes called same day dentures today) because you are never without teeth. You do not ever have to go through that time of getting used to having teeth, as you might need to do if you go without dentures when your gums are healing. What amazes me most is that when I do need to go without my dentures (surgery, etc.) my jaw actually hurts as it has never been closed without teeth. That tight close is actually painful.
I have realized that dentures are not only for old people because they are meant for young people also. As I said, at age thirty three I had my upper dentures. Since then I learned that there are kids that always have to have dentures because of accidents or disease.
